About the Institute
The Kahua Hawaiian Institute

Kutira and Raphael founded The Kahua Hawaiian Institute in 1985. The purpose of the institute is to explore and teach new ways of empowering the body with both scientific and spiritual means; to open the heart so the soul can easily merge with the divine; and to become a pioneer in exploring and discovering new ways for ecological sustainability: including energy sources, construction and farming.

Kahua means “wisdom and power from within” in the ancient Hawaiian language. In this time of great change on our planet, we are aware of the importance of honoring the totality of who we are. To heal is to make whole.

Our Accomplishments
Conservation, Ecology & Sustainability

Beginning in 1995, the Kahua Institute was directly responsible for supporting and creating Bamboo Technologies. Bamboo Technologies is presently creating and teaching new ecological construction techniques of homes and buildings in the countries of China, Bhutan, Nepal, Indonesia, Viet Nam, Costa Rica and the United States.

This unique use of bamboo construction has proven to be strong, durable and aesthetically appealing. Because bamboo is a fast growing plant it has a much higher long-term yield per acreage than conventional trees, thereby significantly decreasing construction costs and serving our ecology as well.

The Kahua O’Malio Bamboo Farm

The Kahua Institute has created an organic farm that is completely off the grid. It is the oldest bamboo farm in Maui, Hawaii. On our land, we designed and built the first two bamboo structures/houses in North America.

In honoring the land, we have naturally studied the teachings of the ancient Hawaiian culture. In the Hawaiian tradition, our land is known as a “resting place of mature souls” which reveals itself as a special loving presence that is quite noticeable as soon as you enter the land.

So it is no accident that sometimes we have allowed mature souls such as Ram Dass, Dr. John Lilly, Tibetan monks, Franciscan monks, Christian ministers, Army Special Forces and a Washington official with stage four cancer who came and healed herself in our healthy, alkaline and healing environment.

Volunteer Work Exchange Program
For the last ten years, the Kahua Farm has implemented a very popular Work Scholar Program where students experience ecologically responsible living, embodied spiritual teachings and personal physical and spiritual renewal. The students spend three to six months on our beautiful rural Maui Hawaiian farm, amidst the jungle, by the ocean with a private waterfall. Only 15 minutes from the town of Haiku. This is the real Hawaii. A place to learn and grow.

Charity
The Kahua Hawaiian Institute has raised significant amounts of money for many worthy causes such as community building, environmental foundations as well as the Tibetan Children’s Fund, Maui Tomorrow, Unity Church, The Studio and many more. Intense networking and a series of benefit concerts have accomplished this.
Children
Kutira and Raphael adopted, supported, raised and taught two Tibetan children. Their daughter is now in college studying to be a nurse and their son is a happily married construction worker and powerful recording artist and dancer.
Embodied Spirituality

To heal is to make whole. That includes the body as well as the soul. Kutira and Raphael have been teaching “Embodied Spirituality” for over 25 years with powerful results in both seminars and private sessions. Their lineage comes from a deep experience of Tibetan, Taoist, Tantric, yoga, Hawaiian, American Indian and Christian traditions. For example, it has been their experience that when simple yet powerful Taoist techniques for strengthening the immune system are empowered with the heart and love, they become miraculous. Their teachings have also been instrumental in reducing cancer and other imbalances by placing the body in an alkaline diet and environment. Dr. Deepak Chopra, Kevin Trudeau and Anthony Robbins have lately popularized these teachings.

Their creation of “The Macrocosm Communication” techniques has proven to be a quantum leap in healing, strengthening and empowering relationships of all kinds.

These teachings are taught in a fun and playful way in a safe space. For the way something is taught is as important as what is taught. And Embodied Spirituality is more than technique - it is a state of being where everything is a sacrament, everything is an expression of God’s love. This has proven to be a path of the heart, physical longevity and enlightenment.

The Art of Music Healing

For over 10 years, Raphael and Kutira have been pioneers in exploring and creating new ways in which music can be a source of balance, healing and opening of the heart into higher states of awareness. Their music has been used extensively in hospitals, death and dying institutes, water birthing, Lomi Lomi massage, yoga workshops and DVDs, recorded guided meditations by many practitioners including Dr. Emmett Miller and Alan Cohen and also used in the “easy listening” section in United Airlines.

Besides selling over a million CDs, here is a list of some of their other musical accomplishments.

  1. From ancient Egypt, they discovered the “Rosetta Stone” of music that includes how harmonies and intervals affect the mind and body and in fact speak a language.

  2. They discovered the lost concerto of Bach. It’s estimated that Johan Sebastian Bach wrote around 300 concertos. Of those concertos, we have only 28 concertos. Now we have 29.

  3. The discovery of new and beautiful harmonies never known to man. These harmonies come from the studies of overtones made by whales.

  4. New and powerful understanding of how positive emotions, prayer and meditation can be inspired by certain harmonies, scales and tempos.

“This is the most elevated spiritual music ever composed. Rarely does one find such a profundity and fullness as in these compositions.”

Live Musical Performances

Raphael and Kutira have created a new form of musical performance. For the last 15 years, they have been performing throughout Europe, America and Asia a special experience called “Spirit in the Body” concerts.

These concerts are unique because they bring in a shamanic element of calling forth positive spiritual energies with lots of audience participation. Including Raphael’s famous psychic readings set to music for members of the audience. If you were a piece of music, this is how you would sound. Also, unique is their wide variety of music including hip-hop, gospel, classical, Balinese, American Indian, Hawaiian and more. They perform in a variety of ways including large concert tours, churches and elegant and mystical chamber concerts.

Kutira’s roots are deeply embedded in Tibetan and Hawaiian traditions. Raphael’s roots come from being raised by a powerful psychic mother, gospel, early 1700 Venetian Baroque and playing music for hundreds of spiritual teachers. These include Alan Cohen, Alan Watts and ten years with Gabrielle Roth. He has played and taught in institutions such as The Tulsa Psychiatric Clinic, Esalen Institute, Omega Institute, The Kripalu Center and many others.

New Dimensions in Dolphin and Whale Communication
(Interspecies Communication)

For over ten years Kutira and Raphael worked with Dr. John C. Lilly, an unparalled scientific visionary who made significant contributions in psychology, brain research, computer theory and medicine. Two movies were made about him: “The Day of the Dolphin” and “Altered States.”     Out of their work together came the following:

  1. The discovery of beautiful new scales and harmonies as yet unknown to man, based upon the overtones of whale songs.

  2. New and solid ways of telepathically communicating with whales and dolphins.

Spiritual Pilgrimages to Bali and Bhutan
Kutira and Raphael have been guiding groups to the sacred sites of Bali and Bhutan (the last unspoiled jewel of the Himalayas). These are journeys of self-discovery honoring the body, mind and soul, creating life-transforming experiences.
